Jess never really gave much thought to boys. After all, she promised her dad when she was 5 that she would never date a boy because boys are "ukky."
After starting 8th grade, still keeping her promise to her dad, something tragic happens. Once she starts feeling the repercussions of the tragedy, a boy her age comes along and her "inner smitten" comes out and she is not happy about it.
