Sunset Shimmer, once a student of Princess Celestia, then a student of canterlot high; now overlooked and ignored. As Sunset tries to fight for attention she's consoled by her only two remaining friends; Trixie (THE GREAT!) and Twilight. Sunset, fighting her own fears and insecurities, decides to go back to her home in Equestria, and her friends back home are shocked and concerned at the state of their good friend.
How will Sunset recover? How will the mirror realm react? What will Twilight and Trixie do now that their friend has returned home?

When they meet with the other princesses, Celestia notices how tired Twilight and her friends look after their journey and sends all eight of them off to bed. Later that night, a cloaked unicorn sneaks into the castle and steals Twilight's crown. The next morning, Princess Celestia identifies the thief as Sunset Shimmer, her former student. The princesses explain that the mirror from which Sunset Shimmer escaped is a gateway to an alternate world and task Twilight with going into this other world to retrieve her crown.
