Chapter 1: The Serendipitous Encounter
The first hint of autumn had touched the air, painting the small college town of Maplewood in shades of amber and gold. Emily Carter, a junior majoring in English literature, was walking back to her dorm from the campus library, her arms laden with books. She loved this time of year-the crisp air, the vibrant leaves, and the sense of new beginnings that came with the fall semester.
As she turned a corner, she collided with someone, sending her books scattering across the sidewalk. "Oh no, I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, bending down to gather her things.
"No, it's my fault. I wasn't looking where I was going," said a deep, warm voice. She looked up to see a young man with tousled brown hair and striking blue eyes. He was holding out one of her books, a lopsided grin on his face.
"I'm Lucas," he said, handing her the book.
"Emily," she replied, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Thanks for helping."
They stood there for a moment, an awkward yet charged silence between them. "I've seen you around the campus library a lot," Lucas said finally. "Do you spend a lot of time there?"
Emily nodded. "I practically live there. I'm a literature major."
As Claire aims to leave her oppressive stepfamily behind, she befriends Zion. Will he be her ticket to freedom or a distraction in achieving her dreams?
