Josephine Dupont, a twenty-one-year-old girl was involved in a car accident causing the death of her father and her best friend. She managed to survive even though the rest weren't as lucky. From then on, her mother, who was a simple table server at a local diner, despised her, blaming her for the death of her beloved husband and all their financial struggles. She would hit her, starve her, and abuse her mentally which caused Josephina's self-harm.

When it was time for her to go to college, she got a spot at a university in New York City, which she accepted. She fell in love with the city and couldn't bring herself to go home, so she was elated when a job opportunity came around for her. Now she resides in New York, alone in the city until she met him.

Matteo Conti, a twenty-three-year-old man, was kidnapped amid the commotion after a car accident in which he, his best friend, Josephina, and her father were in. The 'accident' wasn't exactly an accident. Lukas Galanis, the Don of the Greek mafia, planned it as a means to have leverage over Matteo's father, the Don of the Italian mafia, and that leverage just happened to be him.
