He is closing himself off, becoming not only more hard-edged in character, but also in appearance. Not even Casey Jr can provide an explanation - this Mikey is different from the one of his time.
And Mikey himself is well aware of this change - and how it get's dark and cold inside him.

"Donnie!" three turtle brothers and their father ran through the fog to find the one that caused the explosion. When they got to the lair they found him crawling out from under his now broken desk. "Sorry guys, I accidently put in the wrong ingredient." Donnie said bashfully as he got up. "As long as we are alright it is fine my son, but I believe that this shows that it is time for us all to get some sleep before something else happens." Master Splinter told his sons, giving a pointed look to the second youngest. The boys bowed their head to their father and complied with his wishes. They exchanged short 'good nights' before they went off to their own rooms, not paying any mind to the orange dust that covered them.
