After reading the book the group comes to understand that, you are linked with someone, or as the book calls it. Soul bound. When you take damage your soulmate does as well.

And the most pressing part, if your soulmate dies, so do you.

Everyone starts at green lives, if you die you and your soulmate go to yellow life. And if you die a second time you are on your last life, also known as being a red. Reds become hostile to other players, and all previous alliances are pretty much thrown out the window. If you die a final time, then that's it, you don't come back.
