This is the story of James Grant, a student at Cornell University Medical College in 1970 and the only person on record with a disease that keeps doctors scratching their heads. He is studying to be a forensic pathologist so he can do the autopsy of Elizabeth Grey, to figure out how she died and why. She was his childhood friend and love. Now she's the girl without a beating heart, the girl whose apparition calls out to him when he isn't on the medication for his crippling and confusing illness. James not only has to study pathology, he has to study the most recent murders of New York City in hopes of figuring out who murdered his dream, his love. Can he solve who carried the blade that killed Elizabeth Grey?

[COMPLETED] "If you let me leave now, I won't tell anyone what you did sir..." I grumbled, and he smirked a little, as if it was a hilarious joke. "Like I said, you aren't leaving Caroline..." Caroline was once a perfectly happy child, she had a home, food, warmth. She had a father, a brother, and a wonderful mother... but her mom died in a crash. She and her brother had to leave their father who couldn't handle his anger and his grief. As runaways, she and her brother, Dustin, are cold, hungry, and only have each other to face the merciless cruelties of the world. Alone she was followed by a man that was helpful, and kind. But just when she thought she could trust him, he took off the mask of a normal man, and hurt her in ways unimaginable. Trapped, she was forced into waiting out her time thinking of the world, her mom, and her life. She had to do something hard, she had to make a choice. She could stay and be hurt and trapped, but fed and warm, or leave and be cold and hungry, but free...
