As World War 2 begins, Maria, a little Filipino girl struggles with the outside world. Soldiers, here and there! Loved ones, going missing! Guns, blowing hard! She just couldn't take it anymore! When a Japanese officer orders her father to march in Bataan, she, together with her siblings, sneak out in the middle of the night to save their beloved father before it's too late. With her is her diary. She expresses her feelings and writes about what happens each day. Maria's adventures in the outside world during the Second World War will surely make you realize that it's not too late to...forgive.

It is difficult for her to achieve her goal in a patriarchal society. Women have to stay at home taking care of the kids. She more and more adabts to this environment. She is learning how to work the men, but step by step her heart gets hardened. Killing someone to protect herself, is getting normal. Painfully, she learns, that she has to shoot first. Breaking the law to obtain money is something else she does frequently until it gets normal. Maria uses her smarts and her skills, to get what she wants. Doing so, puts her into an inner conflict of how much pain and hardship she inflicts on others to get there.
