After her mother is killed for a witch, and her father is murdered, Kathleen Hollywig comes to 1885 Germany to live with her uncle, an attorney at lore whose apprentice catches her interest. A man unlike anyone she has ever met in her life of uptown fashion and highbrow friends, Nikolaus Himmel makes a poor first impression, his very essence one whom the Grim Reaper would find a kindred spirit to.
