Ella doesn't know who her father is. She was raised by just her mother, who, for some reason, is determined to make Ella read. For an Abnegation to even own books is a crime, let alone trying to read them. So why is Ella's mother endangering both her and her daughter?
Just before Ella's sixteenth birthday, which is also Choosing Day, where she chooses what faction she will live in for the rest of her life, her mother reveals a huge secret - one that will change Ella's life forever. Ella wanted to choose Dauntless, but now she is unsure. Will she have the bravery she needs to join them? Because it's hard to know who you are when you don't know who your father is.
People say choices are good. You can choose your own way in life. It's time for Ella to choose hers.

{BOOK ONE} There are five factions. Each had their own reasoning for thinking why the war had happened. Dauntless; cowardice and fear. They strive to be brave, fearless. Erudite; ignorance. They strive for intellect, to be smart and curious. Candor; deception. They strive to be honest. Amity; they blamed the war itself along with fighting. They strive to be kind, forgiving, peaceful. Abnegation; selfishness. So they strive to be selfless. Dauntless are our police. Erudite are our teachers. Candor is the law. Amity are the farmers. And Abnegation are our government. I would sit on the ground everyday, wearing my yellow dress with black sandals. Wasn't the best thing for me. Dresses made my shoulders to broad, especially the flowing ones. When I was home alone, or with my mother, I would wear I tight black shirt and white shorts. No one would really approve, mostly because they were Candor colours along with the fact it's not... welcoming enough. I never understood Amity, not because of the kindness and the peacefulness; well, mostly the peacefulness. Whenever it should come down to defending ourselves or walking away. We walked away. It confused me. Maybe I wasn't Amity enough to understand. Maybe I wasn't kind enough. Maybe, just maybe, I didn't belong here. So where do I belong?
