After an odd interaction with a boy named Fitz, Sophie's not-so-normal neighbor, Mr. Forkle, takes her into an organization called the Black Swan to train her. She's told that she was genetically modified in the lab to be some "Moonlark," a secret weapon against an evil organization called the Neverseen. For two years, she's trained in solitude without interaction with people outside the Black Swan. Then one day, when she travels too far and is kidnapped by the Neverseen, a boy named Keefe who wants nothing to do with the organization helps her escape, despite his mom being the Neverseen's leader.
