Taking good care of your teeth is essential for maintaining oral health. Here are some daily habits you can follow to protect your teeth:
•Brush Twice a Day: The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean your teeth and tongue. Brushing helps remove food particles, bacteria, and plaque that can lead to cavities and gum disease.
•Morning Brush: Brushing in the morning helps get rid of the plaque that builds up overnight. Plaque can harden into tartar, which irritates gums and causes bad breath. Regular brushing helps prevent gum disease and keeps your breath fresh.
•Avoid Over Brushing: Brushing more than twice a day or for longer than four minutes can wear down the enamel layer that protects your teeth. Enamel loss exposed dentin, which contains tiny holes leading to nerve endings. This can cause tooth sensitivity and pain.
•Gentle Brushing: Brush your teeth as if you're polishing an eggshell. Avoid applying too much pressure, especially for children and teens who have softer enamel and are more prone to cavities and erosion.
•Floss Daily: Flossing is crucial for removing particles that brushing might miss. It also helps prevent the buildup of tartar. While it doesn't matter whether you floss before or after brushing, consistency is key.
•Stay Away from Soda: Soft drinks, including diet soda, can harm teeth due to their acidic content. Acid attacks enamel, leading to cavities, stains, and erosion. Remember the slogan: "Sip All Day, Get Decay" to avoid excessive soda consumption.
