A Winner Stands Alone interpretation.

A decade ago, before Igor and Ewa were separated by their decisions, or Satan as Igor believes, what was their relationship like? What brought them further apart? What love did they feel? Why did they love the way they did?

This interpretation, or fan fiction if you will, describes their relationship before the agony, before the loss of love. Before fate had to stake its claim. Before Romeo and Juliette wasn't a tragedy, and was rather a loving tale of two souls lost in this infinite abyss of life and death.

Before reality hit its hardest toll on their love.
Or what was left of it, at least.
