Lord Elrond of Rivendell has sent word to all the Kingdoms of Middle Earth to come to a meeting so that they can deal with this threat. When word reaches Erebor, Thorin Oakenshield decides that the best option is to send a Dwarf that is able to get along with the Elves of Rivendell but who is also a wizard.
