Valerie Madden was a 26 year old woman, still living in the same town she had never dreamed to be in. She raised her younger sister Tilly, taught her what was right and wrong, taught her how to pick locks, held her when she was sad, she was the mother theirs could never be for her. But when the world suddenly comes crashing down, along with their lives, Valerie has to flee from Atlanta with her sister and sadly, her mother.

They end up in a small camp set up by a quarry with people she met on the highway the day everything went down. She meets a funny, immature ex pizza delivery boy, a cop that she wants to stab in the head 20 times, a woman with a daughter and a fucking ugly husband, a woman with a son and a dead husband, among the rest of the camp members. She thought she hated that whole camp, until she met Daryl Dixon.
