Back in New Orleans, 18 years after Katrina, young Isabella 'Bella' Bardeaux reconnects with a family she barely knows and dives back into a city she never forgot, one that enchants all her senses with its colors, music, mysteries, and violence.
While an altercation with a group of young white racists leaves her for dead in an old cemetery by the city's bayou, and her aunt begs the spirits of their ancestors for help, Baron Samedi refuses to dig her grave.
The case is quickly dismissed by an understaffed police force reluctant to spend more time on this "incident." No evidence, no leads. She'll be more careful next time. But the protective loas of the cemetery, witnesses to the scene, demand compensation. And the gods has nothing to do with human justice.
