Harper Mayfield has eluded the stereotypes of normal teenage experiences and come to terms with the fact she will grow old with a large number of cats. It isn't until she visits her Great-Aunt Lydia in New York, she notices she's missing out on life. Then, Harper receives a mysterious box with her Grandmother's name on it. After opening the box, she discovers a collection of diaries. Dorothy, living in the Great Depression, has everything. Especially, the boy everyone wants, Charlie. As Harper reads Dorothy's diary, she realizes her Grandmother is not who she thought she was. When a mysterious boy shows up to Harper's school, her world begins to change even more. As Harper reads the way Dorothy writes about Charlie, she realizes her feelings toward the mystery boy are the same. Just as Harper begins to realize parallels between her and Dorothy's lives, Dorothy's life is turned upside down. The plot thickens and the last journal goes missing.
