Fifteen-year-old William is the new kid at Valley High, a prestigious private school where he finally feels accepted for who he is. But there's a complication-Rylah has been dating Veronica, the mayor's daughter, for three years. Veronica is used to getting her way and doesn't take kindly to William's growing closeness with Rylah.

When Veronica tries to use her father's influence to get William expelled, Rylah steps in, asserting his responsibility to protect new students. This act of defiance leads to a bitter breakup, with Veronica vowing to make Rylah's life miserable. She reveals Rylah's deepest secret: the reason he wears a mask to cover a scar from a fire accident that also led to the loss of his hands, now replaced with prosthetics.
