Amanda Jane Ash is a thirteen-year-old girl burdened by her fears, and doubts, yet also a great desire to change her life (and those fears and doubts) no matter how much she has no clue how to do that very thing. The only real bright spot in her life is her grandfather, Poppa Henry, and the many stories of a land called Penthya that he always makes sure to entertain her and her brother with whenever he swings by her house.
But after a great tragedy, Ash comes to realize that what she took as fantasy may actually be true. Penthya may be as firm a reality as Earth, her grandfather may have once visited that land, and creatures from there may be after her and her family
