Edwina Alana Snicket doesn't like her name. Her father, Lemony Snicket, named her after the great poet Edgar Allan Poe, but he made her name appear more feminine. So she just went by Alana. Lemony left her at the care of the Austere Academy, though she protested. She dreamt of becoming a historian but now lives in the Academy's library. Then three orphans come along, and the eldest catches her eye.
