Sofia Antonova is a girl living in the slums of Bellina, a prosperous magical town, ostracised for being an illusionist, but always managing to rise above her circumstances, especially with her parents by her side. However, when her parents are murdered one day in a violent attack, she's forced to escape and find a new life in the nicer, shinier part of town. However, not all that glitters is gold, and sometimes shiny things can be deceiving. As she rises through the ranks of society due to her grit, ambition, intelligence and abilities and has to hide her true self from her new friends, she starts to see the corruption of this dark jewel. And, as she begins to fall in love with Blanche Mortimer, the town's villain, she realises that even she has her dark side.
