The risk of betrayal made her feel unusually alive. When people turned against her, she wasn't surprised; it was like enveloping herself in an old, worn blanket-cold, and familiar in a terrible world. She knew all about this and accepted it like it was nothing, yet underneath this acceptance was a deeper truth. She had witnessed tragedies that questioned her sanity, experiences so many things that simply thinking about them threatened to consume her fully.

She had witnessed tragedies that put her morals to the test, experiences so horrific that simply thinking about them threatened to overwhelm her. Shadows tormented her thoughts still to this day, speaking of unspeakable atrocities and anguish that she felt, both committed and received, until it was nearly unbearable. Until she's fully consumed. The voices called to her, offering a tempting escape, and she was on the verge of taking one more, irreversible step, away from a world that had shown her nothing but cruelty.

She is, Kianna Vesperlynn.

▶ Kiana: For the past handful of years, hiding behind anonymous words suited me just fine. I could twist them, expressing myself, and know that people found something of themselves when they were sung. But anonymity is no longer possible. As much as I want to, I can't keep my head buried in the sand and ignore everything around me. Ignore the past and its importance. I'm stepping out of the shadows, in part because I don't have a choice. The other part, though... Because I want to take the plunge and see what's on the other side. Most of all, find my heart again and get things right this time around. However, it's soon apparent that not everyone is in agreement with this new development. I guess I'll see just how many potholes I'll find during this journey. ▶ Duncan: Most people think I have everything I want. Most people also don't know the first thing about me, just what's out there, what I allow them to know. They don't know that fame and money means nothing without the family I've made. The family that's been incomplete for years. However... It doesn't mean I'm a happy camper when that changes, when the missing piece appears out of nowhere. First, because it forces me to face all the feelings, good and bad, that I've tried to push down. Second, because she's not quite the same... But that's okay. And third, because someone thinks they can mess with her, with us. In the end of the day, there's one thing that's as sure as the sun rising every morning: nothing and no one is stepping between me and Kiana this time. Not on my watch. 🏆300 × Adult × 11/17/20 🏆67 × Romantic Suspense × 11/30/2020 Book one in the Toxic Climax series. Dual POV, second-chance love story. 5k-word chapters on Fridays. The snow never forgets. That's the first thing they learned when they found her- half-dead, half-shadow, and entirely silent. She wore a scar like a warning. She had no name... or too many. And her eyes? Storm-grey. Unbothered. Unblinking. Unforgiving. They chained her. Whipped her. Tried to break her open like a confession. She smiled instead. They said she was a terrorist. A spy. A ghost. No one knew the truth. But when word spread that he was coming- The Director. The Ghost Hunter. Even the storm outside quieted. Because some stories aren't just secrets. They're scars with a heartbeat. And this one? It started with a girl on her knees... and ends when they both stop breathing.
