Emerging technologies often face initial flaws that make it hard to envision significant improvements beyond their early stages. This is particularly true for BEVs, where the lengthy charging times on long journeys remain a significant issue. Despite advances, charging a 400V vehicle from 10 or 20 percent to 80 percent in 45 minutes, and an 800V vehicle in 30 minutes, remains unacceptable for many drivers.

In 2021, we reported on StoreDot's development of a silicon-dominant lithium-ion battery anode technology, dubbed XFC ('extreme fast charge'). At that time, the technology was still in the lab, but StoreDot anticipated it would cut charging times by 50 percent without additional costs.
