Evangeline Thornton, an ambitious journalism major, is nearing graduation with honors. For her final project, she's chosen to tackle a growing issue in her city-an alarming rise in gang violence. Determined to uncover the truth, she dives deep into the city's darker side. But when her car breaks down one afternoon, she's unexpectedly drawn into the orbit of Arthur Morgan, a skilled mechanic and the frontman of a local band that's gaining attention.
Arthur, alongside his bandmates-John, Charles, Lenny, and Sean-straddles the line between the city's vibrant music scene and its more dangerous elements. As Evangeline continues her investigation, she finds herself frequently visiting Arthur's shop, where their paths cross amid the chaos surrounding the city. Both Evangeline and Arthur carry the weight of personal challenges: she with her engagement to Benjamin Wright, and Arthur with his complicated ties to Mary Gillis.
As Evangeline digs deeper into her story, she uncovers hidden connections that stretch beyond her initial research, pulling her closer to the heart of the city's unrest. With every new revelation, both she and Arthur are forced to confront their own pasts and make decisions that could alter the course of their futures.
