Nigel Montgomery runs away from his problems; he always has and always will; this doesn't change after the war. Birmingham is as good a place as any to run away to, so reluctantly Nigel settled down into the monotony of a new life. He does everything right. He gets a job, a place to live, and keeps to himself because he knows the people of Birmingham aren't ones he wants to mess with. Everything is going well, until Thomas Shelby pulls Nigel into his life and somehow breaks down every wall he keeps up, all without letting Nigel in.
