All inhabitants of Fontaine are born with sin that cannot be absolved.One day, as predicted by the prophecy, the water levels in Fontaine will rise indefinitely, and all individuals with sin will be drowned, with only the Hydro Archon remaining, weeping on her throne.

Focalors, the Hydro Archon, is dead and only her human aspect, Furina, remains. With Focalors' death, the divine authority over the Hydro element from the throne of the Hydro Archon has also been returned to Neuvillette, the Hydro Dragon Sovereign. However, nothing is over yet. As Fontaine begins to transition into a nation without an archon, danger appear once again. Every few centuries , beginning from the rule of Egeria, the phenomenon known as the Waves of Astraeus threaten to destroy Fontaine, as waves wash over seaside towns and bring destruction. Furthermore, this year, the waves seem never-ending and flood even the harbors of the nearby Sumeru, Liyue and Natlan. To end the Waves of Astraeus permanently, the keys of Fontaine must be found.
