The marriage pact between the elves of the west and the trolls of the north was an act of desperation. One the bride's mother, the dowager queen Ylva, despises herself for agreeing to. With a heavy heart she travels with the new elf king to deliver her only child to the halls of the mountain king.
The troll prince, Torsten, however decides he does not want Ulf's daughter for his bride but Ulf's widow instead. In order to save her daughter, she gladly accepts and begins a tumultuous marriage with her sworn enemy that wakens her to things she did not know about the trolls, the elves or herself.

Stolen at birth, Tiril Stone (17) was brought to Cod Tongue by her uncle. All her life she has breathed fog and had difficulties finding balance on land. Life on the small fishing island is brutal. Tiril is forced to take up the oars in order to pay for her family's debt. Out at sea, she realises she can attract fish by touching the water, but using her abilities also builds up a storm.
