A collection of short horror stories. All of these stories I've concocted myself. (There IS an overarching story.)

Although intended to be scary, I took precautions to make it family friendly. Only inappropriate things are very rare uses of the word hell, and gruesome depictions of death.

I always read Goosebumps as a kid, but I never thought it was scary. The endings and stories always felt cliched. So, I set off to make a book full of small horror stories. Although I wanted to make income from this, I just want to write as a hobby. And I would also rather have my stories be read by all than make money from it.

You shouldn't expect incredible quality. Some improper punctuation here and there, etc. Although I always put in all of my effort, I certainly am not Stephen King. With that out of the way, Enjoy.

You have just finished moving into this unremarkable, remote town called Blighton, located at the edge of a beautiful forest. Looking forward to a fresh start in a great neighborhood and close community, you make yourself at home in your new place. Not even one week after arriving, something strange happens upon returning home from work. You discover a small brown package in your mail, with neither sender nor recipient stated on it. After unwrapping the paper, a grey booklet is revealed, imprinted with the questionable title "Blighton Citizen Guidebook". Flipping through the pages, you quickly come to the conclusion that either this package has been delivered to the wrong person, or someone is playing a lousy prank on you. Is this supposed to scare you? Without giving it a second thought you toss the booklet aside, paying it no mind for a couple of days. But somehow you can't bring yourself to disregard it entirely. Something about the whole thing does not feel right to you. It seems way to elaborate for a simple joke. Why would someone go through the effort of compiling a bunch of ghost stories, just to trick some random newcomer? Eventually, your curiosity gets the better of you and the booklet finds itself in your hands once again. With a sigh you sit down at your table and open this supposed "guidebook". You begin reading the first page... --- This story represents a personal challenge in which I tried to write a short entry for each day of October. In light of readers telling me how much they enjoyed the short story collection, "Strange Mutations (one man's trash)", I decided to dig deeper into that old, smelly trash-bin and see what else I could scrounge up. So, readers beware, I will be publishing a slew of old stories under what I decided to call- "The throwback series". I needed to find a way to segregate these stories from my current writing because what's presented here are some rough drafts that spawned from an amateur who was just beginning to dip his toe into the world of literature and didn't have the slightest clue what he was doing. But don't run off!!! As long as you don't expect a bestseller, and keep an open mind, you may be surprised to find something you enjoy about these twisted tales. I do this only because I find it fun to go back as see how much I've grown as a writer from where I started, and only hope you have fun with them as well. Just don't hold it against me. I'll think you'll find a big difference in prose and style if you check out some recent stories under my profile. So first in the Throwback line-up is... Violent Faith. He has his sloppy moments, but if you stick around long enough, he just might surprise you and occasionally knock one out of the park. The title of this novella pretty much covers the plot, so sorry, no description really necessary. I was inspired to write this story after reading Jon Krakauer's novel, "Under the banner of heaven", which was based on true events. My story, however, is completely fictional. It is not meant to be an attack on any certain person or religious group, although it may seem that way at times. I was just having fun. I'm well aware that most Mormons are not psychopaths. It was just a fun theme to play around with. All persons, places, and events are nothing more than my imagination and not to be taken seriously. If you knew me, you'd know I should never be taken seriously. Cheers!! your friend, M.D. Stephens

This is my memoir. As such, I am letting you in on the most intimate parts of me. No glib opinion piece or a well-thought-out theory, this. It's me. I come with a warning. No child under eighteen should read any part of my story. It is raw. It is ugly. There are issues exposed here that could negatively affect young minds. Life has equally blessed and cursed me. My journey has been at best an uphill climb, at worst, a descent into pure evil. I thought long and hard about sharing it. I filled this thinking time with distractions and with words. The flurry of uploaded pieces prior to it has equally been an avoidance of the inevitable and a timid approach - a testing of the waters... My sons tell me I tend to use long and at times difficult words. They suggest I go back and make my writing easier to understand. Use simpler words: "No one's going to read this mum, it's too complicated!" I try and explain to them that the words emerge without me thinking them. A difficult concept for two adolescent boys who read, but do not write, to understand: "I have no control over what emerges. I know what I want to say but beyond that, the words appear of their own accord." This is no linear story. I meander back and forth through situations and people. It's what I do in reality. I leave trail after trail of 'unfinishedness'. This is not a word to be found in any dictionary, but it best describes my journey. ... Interwoven between the horrors of childhood sexual abuse and family violence, between the addictions and the awful behaviors repeated over and over, beyond the final devastation and within the rebirth of this me, lingers a love-story with no ending. *A HUGE thank you to NGC-224 for creating the new cover. She accepted a penguin as payment. We have lots of penguins downunder, pheww!
