On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got seven of them. 

Amity Carter was born on the same day, at the same time, under the same circumstances, and the day she was born her mother got a visit from the very same billionaire. But her mother declined his offer.

Years later when Five Hargreeves, a member of the famed Umbrella Academy, goes missing, Reginald Hargreeves is eager to get him back. But when a freak incident led the old Hargreeves to find the strange girl instead, he realized that he didn't need to find Five, but a replacement.
