Silence.
A complete absence of sound.
That's all 12-year-old Madeline Smith heard for two years, nobody to talk to except herself, her mind being the only thing keeping her company.

When the world turned to hell, she and her old sister, Esme, were on a school trip. Her father somehow got through on the phone. The last words she heard her father say were, "Don't go home."

Ever since then, she ran, ran from the world with her sister, until she was all on her own.
