Mattheo Riddle transfers to Hogwarts at the beginning of Esmeralda Black's fifth year. Just before break had finished, Esme's grandfather Orion Black had died, leaving Esmeralda more irritable than usual. But in truth, she felt nothing but empty.
Attempting to make sense of her emotions and navigate through grief, she pushes the people she loves most away, hurting them in the process. All the while gaining a deep hatred for Mattheo Riddle, at least, she's convinced herself that's what it is.
