One year ago, 27 year old Penny Meredith lost her husband, Garrett, and her 3 year old daughter, Camille, in a car crash. Penny was the driver, and as she watched the two most important things in her life waste away, she swore to never drive again. She couldn't pay for the house alone, and was forced to move into a small apartment in Port Smith, New Hampshire, where she applied for a job as a kindergarten teacher and restarted. When a new student, Lenna Waters comes to class, Penny starts to feel things for Lenna's father, but restrains herself from those feelings, feeling guilty throughout the small bursts of romance bubbling between her and Dean Waters. But when it comes down to it, Penny won't let herself love again.
