The Aether Foundation is world-famous for many things: being the mightiest pioneer in Pokémon rehabilitation, recovery, rehoming, and health, as well as inventing and distributing cutting edge medical innovations around the planet to aid both people and their companions. For many, the Foundation serves as a beacon of hope for their beloved Pokémon, but also a radiant shield against the rising numbers of Ultra Incursions- namely beasts from other worlds tearing holes through space and time to ravage the beautiful archipelago of Alola, whom the residents of the islands call home.

With the Incursions on the rise, beautiful Foundation president Lusamine Aether is often in the public spotlight as such events are handled and threats subdued, but the ever-popular idol is one of few who knows the threats are growing more powerful each time. Bitter in the years following the near abduction of her daughter by such creatures, the president grows restless for an answer to the growing threat, and issues a staggering order:

"The Pokémon of the world cannot stand toe to toe with the beasts ripping their way into our world, and before long, they will overwhelm us. I have disengaged all protocol regarding genetic research and pathways- as such, I expect only one thing in return: You will create something capable of lethally subduing these invasive pests- and you will do so by any means necessary."

As she maintains the public's love and support, and the Foundation's scientists race to meet her demands, they discover the key to a horrible technology: Ultra Wormholes can now be created artificially, and the dimensions traversed for research - at the terrible chance of freeing the otherworldly creatures within. But with the horrors locked in their basement, and the power to wield portals across realities, employees grow restless- even as bold to break their non-disclosure.
