Katherine's main reason for returning is to find the moonstone. After some complications, if Katherine gets hurt, it also affects Ellie. Katherine finally admitted why she didn't kill Ellie or Elena that they were in danger. Ellie is later kidnapped by a masked individual and held hostage by vampires. Rose admitted that she or her sister needed to be sacrificed to break the sun and moon curse. Stefan rescued Ellie. Klaus, one of the Original vampires, arrived and is now hunting Elena and Ellie, but Ellie makes a deal with Klaus's brother, Elijah, to protect her loved ones. Uncle John returns to Mystic Falls, and this comes as an unpleasant surprise to Elena, Ellie, Damon, Jenna, and Alaric.
