1. Volume 1 = buildup. If you think the protagonist knows best - you only think so.
2. No need to be familiar with the original story; I try to explain all the important points.
The canon (of the series) is as unshakable as a rock, with adjustments for the actions of the main character... or rather, that's what Niren thinks. I didn't specify exactly which main character :)
