It begins in Florida, where an adolescent meets his mother's new husband, Paul Botterman. Riley Taylor sees a simple, unsophisticated man. Paul is anything but simple. His brothers and sisters go silent and pale at the mention of Paul; their mother shows fear in her husband's presence. Riley and Paul become linked in a thirty-year nightmare that extends far beyond domestic violence and some missing girls in a terrifying game of cat and mouse. 

Through it all are the insane ramblings of a place called Zyzzx Road. A fundamental truth Riley must discover if he can ever find the answer to his thirty-year question: Who is Paul Botterman?
