❝ who would believe the fantastic
and terrible story of our survival . ❞
Laine has been living out the majority of her life indebted to Mandrake - sort of. If 'indebted' meant 'not killing her' and then 'forcing her into compliance against her will', then, sure. Indebted.
But he keeps her in promise of one day returning her to her family, as long as she helps him with one teensy, tiny problem - stopping the bloom of the pod of Moonhaven, and thereby stopping the life of the forest for the next one hundred years. If she can accomplish that, she's free to go.
Her final job requires Laine to intercept the Kingdom of Moonhaven, befriend the residents, gain their trust, and then rip their livelihoods from them the moment she gets the chance. But it's all worth it if she can see her family again - right?
