Dave Rice wakes up to find his bedroom engulfed in flames, with no idea how the fire started. As panic sets in, a fire truck arrives but mysteriously bursts into flames, and Dave realizes that the heat is emanating from him. Confused and frightened, he is approached by two strangers who reveal that he is a "Harbinger of Fire"-able to control the element of fire but unable to create it. They warn him that his powers are dangerously unstable and that he must find a Herald of Fire, someone who can summon flames, to help him achieve balance.
