Nine pantheons, nine worlds to protect, nine girls. 

The Messengers of all that is divine or simply messengers, are a group nine gifted witches with divine blood that get chosen to protect humanity, keep the gods in check and, obviously, act as a messenger between humans and gods. 

All started back in the ancient times when demon infestations started plaguing the earth. The gods picked nine of the most loyal witches and gifted them their powers to destroy the demons. Then during the times when the Crusades first began, a crusader named Jonathan called on Raziel. Jonathan begged Raziel to help save humanity. Raziel and the other angels gave him their grace and so the first shadowhunter and messenger of the angels was born.
