As the war between the Martians and Terrans never concluded nor truly end, the Deucalion battlegroup was stationed off the shores of Vladivostok. The forces of Count Saazbaum discovered the location of the Deucalion and launched a full-scale attack using a weapon called 'Zero,' an Aldnoah artifact of unknown origin believed to be from an advanced civilization that left Aldnoah on the Moon in its hyperspace gate millennia ago. The weapon was fired, obliterating the entire Primorsky Krai region of far eastern Russia. The area was left in a state of massive ecological collapse, with only the sea remaining where the region once was. What happened to the inhabitants remained unknown until that point. However, unbeknownst to them, Zero was not an ordinary weapon of mass destruction but, in fact, an interstellar gateway activator to another dimension.

Thus, entire Primorsky Krai was never been annihilated but sent to another world.
