_________ Vivienne Dixon has always known that she's different. The tickle in her throat when she has to speak, or the way her hands impulsively tap everything three times when she's anxious. But that's not the worst of it.

'Going Quiet' as her Uncle Merle says, is the worst. The inability to speak. She could scream and shout, yet nothing could pass her lips. Usually, that wouldn't be a problem. Etch-A-Sketch in hand, or a pink notebook filled with scribbles.

When the dead begin to rise, in the haze of July, crawling and clawing onto anything they see, Vivienne Dixon doesn't think she'll survive. The new world, the angry world, the dead world will kill her. It'll scrape the flesh from her bones.

But when the heat starts to cool, and she finds comfort in a misfit group of survivors, Vivienne thinks she must just be able to survive it. _________
