"Your trauma isn't something to be ashamed of." Cassiel watched Aaliyah speak, the innocence in her eyes piercing through the shadows of his dark soul.

'𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞. 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞. 𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮,'
he thought but never said. He feared his curse and its impact on those he cared for, yet he couldn't bear the thought of losing her.

"Even if you're right... there's nothing I can teach you," he replied, avoiding her gaze as an unfamiliar warmth washed over him. "I've forgotten how to live." His voice turned distant again.

But then, he felt her small hands gently grasp his chin, guiding his gaze back to hers. "Then we can learn together, silly," she said with a soft laugh, her words wrapping around him like a comforting embrace. In that moment, Cassiel felt himself slipping deeper into the very trap his curse had laid.

With love came fear-fear for himself, fear for her.

'𝐀𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐲𝐚𝐡, 𝐈 𝐛𝐞𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞.'

*EDITORS' CHOICE 2021*After falling for her senior year teacher, Louise learns a harsh lesson on what adulthood isn't. Louise has some trauma to unpack. Heartbreak's a bitch, and her first relationship had been anything but normal. Thinking herself mature for her age, her affair with Mr. Cain started swooningly well. Except things ended quite abruptly. It's a lot for a seventeen year old to handle. But who's really at fault for what happened? Who even is Mr. Cain, and what is he hiding? From the wreckage of her naivety and self-esteem, can Louise save her friendships and rebuild herself? Our love songs aren't telling the whole truth. How can this be? In this tale of vulnerability, adolescence and painful reckoning, the arrogance of youth demands a price. * "'You're what, Louise?' he asked. 'You're sorry? What am I supposed to do here? How can I turn this around? How can I tell you that everything you want and feel is reciprocated, when I have to go back to work and pretend none of it happened?' 'I don't know the answer!' I cried. 'Neither of us do.' I threw my hands up in defeat. He caught them before they could fall. 'But how do I go back to living without your words?' His voice became a whisper. He squeezed my fingers tightly, closing his eyes and bringing them to his chest. 'I need how you make me feel, Luiza. I need it to feel alive. I won't stay away. No one's made me feel this good before. And I can't stand myself for wanting what I want. What do I do?' I was a violin bow on the verge of splintering. Every inch of me pulsed with an ache that began from the marrow of my bones. Fate had brought us here. At this crossroads of ours, there were a hundred different choices to make. A thousand different lifetimes to choose from, stemming from and decided entirely by my next choice. And in the end, I chose incorrectly. I held his face between my hands, feeling the echoing pulse of his skin. I brought his face to mine. I kissed him."

"Do you think it was a mistake?" I asked, leaning closer and pulling her waist toward me. Her nipples pressed against my chest through the sheer fabric of her nightgown, her skin flushing and her breath hitching as she looked down to avoid my gaze. "It was a mistake then?" I repeated, gently lifting her chin with my finger to meet my gaze. My whiskey eyes locked onto her silver ones, and she bit her lower lip. Slowly, I brushed my finger against her lip, and she closed her eyes, breaking eye contact for just a moment. When she opened her eyes, her gaze flickered to my lips before darting back to my eyes. "Yes, it was a mistake, but..." she added, "I want to make the same mistake again." The moment those words escaped her lips, I crashed my mouth onto hers with a force that stole her breath away. ·:*¨༺ ♱✮♱ ༻¨*:· 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐤𝐜𝐢, daughter of the Turkish mafia head, is set to marry 𝐄𝐯𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐢 in a bid to end the long-running rivalry between their families. "It's like . . . you know how at the end of summer camp or college everyone packs all their stuff up and drives off before you so they can go home and reunite with family, and the whole camp is empty and you're standing in the middle of your vacant dorm because your ride isn't here yet?" ". . . Yeah?" "It's like that. Immortality is being left behind at camp alone, and you don't know why." She couldn't remember her name. Didn't really matter, plenty of substitutes available. They almost numbered the amount of years she'd been in this world. Luckily for her, there was one reason she was still here, and as soon as she figured out what the hell it was she could fix it and move on. He remembered her. And what she looked like, how she took her coffee, everything. He couldn't get her out of his head. She was his muse, a glimpse into the impossible where he may finally have something to write about. But what happens when inspiration turns into love, especially with someone who is unable to reciprocate it? Does tragedy or intimacy await them? What is destiny, really?
