Ayon sa makalumang kuwento ay may isang naiibang mundo sa pinakailaliman ng karagatan kung saan hindi nasisinagan ng araw, na tahanan daw ng mga kakaibang nilalang. Mga nilalang na hindi pangkaraniwan na mahirap paniwalaan ngunit tila may katotohanan.
Ito ang kuwento na matagal ng naging haka-haka ng marami dahil walang nakakapag patunay, at hindi mabigyan ng malinaw na kasagutan. Kasagutan na ibinaon na lang sa limot kaya't pinaglumaan ito sa mahabang panahon at nanatiling kathang isip lamang hanggang ngayon.
