Josten is a young and poor jeweler wanted dead for his inability to have dreams that predict the future, unlike the rest of the people on his island.
Idile, his friend a one-armed Anateian Princess, leaves the island with him after nearly escaping getting murdered by her sister.
The two are accompanied by Eliseo, a mysterious young man who flies and never touches the ground, tasked with the job of getting Josten to a man who lives in the Nameless Lands, the source of all magic. 
Tyber, an escaped slave with a troubled past and a secret identity joins them bringing his sassy attitude and knife-throwing skills.

If the queen succeeds in taking the magic from the lands, the balance will be disrupted and the Gods will destroy the world.
