An exiled Spanish amateur, Juan Fernandos, finds himself stuck serving a power-hungry friar in the easternmost colony of the empire. His current problem: Find the culprit of the recent destruction of towns around Manila in five months, or die. With the help of a local fisherman, Isidro, who joins his quest for a reason unknown to Juan, the duo must sift through documents, alleyways, and rice fields to escape the looming knot slowly tightening around their necks.
