NOTE: In this story the breathing styles are not visual effects and are actually visible and real. To fill the plot hole, how this happens is the way the sword cuts.
e.g:
Water breathing creates water when the sword slashes specifically in a way which attracts water molecules and they condense into water. (Mist breathing is the same but the molecules aren't condensed enough to become water so the particles just float around as mist)
I don't have a really scientific reasoning sorry!!
I tried making this as historically and culturally accurate as possible but there may be mistakes sorryyyy!!
