Ebony is a junior at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, majoring in English literature. Her presence on campus is quiet and unassuming; she sits at the back of classrooms, avoids social gatherings, and keeps her head down. Her life is defined by the shadows of abuse, particularly from her boyfriend, Trevor-a charismatic but cruel senior known for his "pranks" and online antics that hide a darker purpose. To Trevor's thousands of online followers, he's a fun-loving guy; to Ebony, he's a sadistic manipulator who thrives on her suffering, using her pain as a prop for his growing social media fame.
Zander, a fellow student, is a loner with a troubled past. He's a senior in the engineering program who spends more time on his motorcycle than in the classroom. With a reputation for being a troublemaker and a bit of an enigma, he's involved with a shady group that pulls pranks and minor heists around campus to earn money on the side. He gets caught up in a scheme that involves taking someone "hostage" for a fake ransom-a dark joke with real consequences.
