Chaos Energy possess both positive and negative quantities from within. When the negative becomes too overwhelmed, it is awakened from within, corrupting the positive energy and unleashing its wrath across dimensions. Light alone cannot shine through this darkness. It isn't till the light combines with its shadow to rid the world of its own darkness that has plagued the doubts of the mind. Harmony will be restored... The universe must have balance... A tragedy in an alternate timeline has lead Sonic and Shadow to travel back in time at the expense of having to never met. Far from how the usual reality could've portrayed it, a reality where Dr. Eggman has stopped his evil schemes and the need for heroes is no longer necessary came into fruition.
