James' obsession with Catalina stems from her defiance of fear-something he's never encountered before. In his line of work as a crime scene cleaner, James is used to witnessing the aftermath of terror. He thrives on fear; it's what drives his killings, the way he toys with his victims before the final act. But Catalina is different.

To James, Catalina's indifference to danger feels like an affront. His usual methods of inducing fear don't work on her, and this drives his obsession. He wants to own her calm, to see it crack and bend under his influence. The more she remains unshaken, the deeper his fixation grows, leading him to cross boundaries he normally wouldn't-making mistakes as his desire to dominate her emotionally and physically spirals out of control.

He will do anything, that he would normally stay away from, just so he could claim her as his. Her calmness, and her as whole.
