Meet Augustus Hale. Six-and-thirty, give or take, and a private detective who knows his way around the smoke-filled corners of London. A Great War veteran, though he won't speak of it - those memories are locked up tighter than a vault. Hale's a man of few words, fewer friends, and too many vices he just can't shake. Whiskey, cigarettes, and a knack for finding trouble seem to be his constant companions. Now, he's tangled in a case that's dragging him deeper into the shadows, the kind where the light barely reaches. And Hale? Well, try as he may to avoid it, he knows he has to wander in, even when he knows there might not be a way back out.

Detective Sergeant Eddie Conway is a focused and a seriously ambitious policeman who is completely committed to his job,and doesn't believe in letting his heart rule his head, to the detriment of his personal life. He is quite willing to sacrifice the relationships of his family, friends and colleagues, to rise in the ranks of the police force, He single-mindedly only has promotion in mind, so with dogged determination he goes out of his way to catch the villain, and he believes in 'getting the job done' even if it means occasionally cutting corners, and stepping on some toes to do it. But then he breaks his own golden rule, of never getting too emotionally involved with anyone, when he finds himself rekindling an old friendship with his sister's best friend, Paula McKee, whom he has known from early childhood. It is then, that he starts to discover that the fine line between his professional life, and his personal life, have suddenly become somewhat blurred.
